  30. IBM or 100% Compatible, 386 or above.
  31. 4 MB of RAM,
  32. 3 1/2 1.44 MB High Density floppy disk drive,
  33. Hard disk with at least 10 MB free space,
  34. VGA or SVGA card with color monitor,
  35. Microsoft-compatible mouse,
  36. Math Co-processor highly recommended!
  37. Sound blaster, Adlib, Covox, Roland or 100% compatible sound cards
  38. optional.

  43. GENERAL INFORMATION
  44. -------------------
  45. This appendum/Quick Start guide contains all the DOS-specific
  46. information needed to start and play El-Fish on an IBM compatible
  47. computer.
  48.  
  49. El-Fish Is A Glutton.
  50. El-Fish is a very technologically advanced piece of software that
  51. requires massive amounts of mathmatical calculations and pushes the
  52. limits of today's home computers. As a result, it eats up memory - both
  53. RAM and hardrive space - and it uses all the computer power you can give
  54. it. If you don't have a math coprocessor some of the features andfunctions
  55. may take a while. Have patience. (note: the 486DX - not the 486SX - has
  56. a built in math coprocessor.)
  57.  
  58. Included disks
  59. El-Fish comes on 3.5@ 1.44 MB high density disks. 5 1/4 1.2 MB disks are
  60. available free from Maxis. See the enclosed coupons in the El-Fish box
  61. for details.

  63. Screen Resolutions
  64. El-Fish runs in two resolutions on DOS machines:
  65.  
  66. -Regular Resolution - 376 X 348, 256 colours
  67.  
  68. -High Resolution  - 640X 400, 256 colours
  69.  
  70. El-Fish will run in regular resolution on any VGA card. .It will run in
  71. high resolution on SOME SVGA cards. The cards we've tested and know will
  72. run El-Fish in High Resolution are:

  94. not on the list above, please note it on your reg card in the comment
  95. section, and tell us if it will or won't run high res. El-Fish.

  97. On some cards you may first need to run a VESA driver. See the docs and
  98. disks that came with your card for information on the VESA and VESA
  99. drivers.

  101. NOTE:- RUNNING EL-FISH IN HIGH RESOLUTIN REQUIRES MORE COMPUTER POWER
  102. AND SLOWS DOWN PARTS OF THE PROGRAM. iF YOU DON'T HAVE A 486DX OR A MATH
  103. COPROCESSOR, AND YOU FIND EL-FISH RUNS TOO SLOWLY, REINSTALL IT TO RUN
  104. IN REGULAR RESOLUTION.

  106. Included Files
  107. Your main goal in El-Fish is to create fish and aquariums, but we
  108. included a few finished fish and aquariums to help you get started.
  109. There are also some Roe files - Generic data to create fish - Located in
  110. the Fish direcxtory. Some of the Roe are wonderfully strange mutants.
  111. See the Roe Library section of the User Manual for details.
  112.  
  113. INSTALLATION
  114. ------------
  115. El-Fish must be installed to a hard disk before you can play with it.
  116. Here's how:
  117.  
  118. 1. Put El-Fish disk 1 into your A: or B: floppy drive.
  119. 2. Type A: [ENTER] or B: [ENTER], Depending on your drive.
  120. 3. Type INSTALL [ENTER]
  121. 4. Follow the instructions on the screen: Enter your name when asked,
  122. answer any questions, and change disks when prompted.
  123. 5. After the installation is done, remove the final El-Fish floppy disk
  124. from your drive.
  125.  
  126. STARTING EL-FISH
  127. ----------------
  128. After installtion (see above), make sure you are in the ELFISH
  129. directory, and type ELFISH [ENTER]
  130.  
  131. TROUBLESHOOTING
  132. ---------------
  133. If El-Fish doesn't run on your computer, try making a boot disk, as
  134. explained below. If it still doesn't work then call Mindscape Technical
  135. Support on (0444) 239600. If possible, be at your computer when you
  136. call, and have El-Fish package and disks with you. We have included on
  137. El-Fish disk 1 a program called INFO.EXE. It analyses your computer and
  138. lists vital information that will help our technicians track down and
  139. solve any problems. If you cannot be at your computer when you call,
  140. please run INFO.EXE before you call and copy down the information it
  141. writes on your screen.
  142.  
  143. Making a boot disk
  144. If El-Fish won't run on your computer using your normal setup, make a
  145. boot disk and boot from it when you want to run El-Fish.
  146.  
  147. Step 1. Place a blank disk in the A: drive and FORMAT it with system
  148. operation: FORMAT A:/S. This will format the disk and copy your system
  149. files onto it all in one step, making it bootable. If you are running a
  150. version of dos earlier than 5, then you will also need to copy your
  151. COMMAND.COM file from the root directory of your hard drive to the boot
  152. disk.

  154. Step 2. Copy your mouse driver (usually called MOUSE.COM or MOUSE.SYS) to
  155. the boot disk.
  156.  
  157. Step 3. Create an AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the boot disk:
  158.         1) type A: [Enter]
  159.         2) type COPY CON AUTOEXEC.BAT [Enter]
  160.         3) type PROMPT $p$g [Enter]
  161.         4) type Mouse [Enter] (if you are using MOUSE.COM)
  162.         5) type C: [Enter]
  163.         6) type CD\ELFISH [Enter]
  164.         7) type ELFISH [Enter]
  165.         8) press the F6 key, then [Enter]
  166.  
  167.         Note: if ELFISH is not in C:\ELFISH, change lines 5 and 6 to the
  168.         correct drive and directory. If you are using MOUSE.COM to run
  169.         your mouse leave line 5 out of the CONFIG.SYS file below. If you
  170.         are using MOUSE.SYS, remove line 4 from the AUTOEXEC.BAT and run
  171.         the mouse from the CONFIG.SYS file.

  173. Step 4. Create a CONFIG.SYS file on the boot disk
  174.         1) Type A: [Enter]
  175.         2) Type COPY CON CONFIG.SYS [Enter]
  176.         3) type FILES=25 [Enter]
  177.         4) type BUFFERS=25 [Enter]
  178.         5) type DEVICE=MOUSE.SYS [Enter] (if you are using MOUSE.SYS)
  179.         6) Press the F6 key, then [Enter]
  180.  
  181.         Note: if you are running disk-doubling or disk-compressing
  182.         software for your hard disk, you will have to add one or two
  183.         lines to the CONFIG.SYS file. See the manual that came with
  184.         your compression software for details
  185.  
  186. Step 5. Reboot your machine with the new El-Fish Boot Disk in Drive A:
  187.         When you are finished playing, remove the disk from the drive
  188.         and reboot your hard disk to return to your normal setup.
  189.  
  190. Be sure to label the disk so you can easily find it next time you want
  191. to play El-Fish.
  192.  
  193. FOR TECHNICAL EXPERTS ONLY
  194. If el-Fish won't run with your normal setup, and you dont want to use a
  195. boot disk, and you feel comfortable with editing your CONFIG.SYS and
  196. AUTOEXEC.BAT files and wont blame us if you mess it up, then make sure
  197. your FILES and BUFFERS setting are both set to at least 25. If that
  198. doesnt do it, try diabling your expanded memory manager. Be sure to
  199. reboot after editing your CONFIG.SYS. And be Careful
  200.  
  201. QUICK START
  202. -----------
  203.  
  204. First install El-fish as explained above.
  205.  
  206. After the title screens have had their say and gone away you will find
  207. yourself looking at the Main Menu, where all El-Fishian activites begin.

  231. El-Fish is easy to use, and fairly self explanatory. Just remember these few
  232. things
  233.  
  234.  - you can always return to the main menu by repeatedly clicking on the
  235.    EXIT button or pressing the Escape key on your keyboard.
  236.  
  237.  - Click on various buttons to activate the different features and
  238.    functions.
  239.  
  240.  - You can always get context sensitive help at any time by pressing the
  241.    F1 key on your keyboard.
  242.  
  243.  - Keep and eye on the title bar at the top of the screen for helpful
  244.    messages.
  245.  
  246.  - See the user Manual for a compplete tutorial and reference that will
  247.    tell you everything you could ever want to know about El-Fish. And then
  248.    some.

  251. For Now Click on the VIEW button in the SLIDE SHOW section of the main
  252. menu and relax.
  253.  
  254. When you're ready to dive into El-Fish and begin, press the Escape key
  255. on your keyboard to end the slide show. Be sure to check out the
  256. tutorial in the User Manual.
  257.  
  258. LAST MINUTE INFO

  261. UTILITIES
  262. ---------

  264. A few utility programmes come with El-Fisg, including Mconvert (a
  265. program that converts MIDI files into a format that El-Fish can play)
  266. and PCONVERT (a program that converts drawings or scan in PCX format or
  267. TIFF files into objects that can be placed into El-Fish Tanks).
  268.  
  269. A complete explanation of these and other utilities cn be found in the
  270. User Manual, but heres some last minute information.
  271.  
  272.  - MCONVERT only works with standard MIDI files and only works properly
  273.    on files that only have instruments on channels two through thirteen.
  274.    It works best with MIDI files for the Roland MT-32.
  275.  
  276.  - PCONVERT only works on graphics files that are saved in 8-bit (256
  277.    colour) modes A file called PALETTE.PCX is included and can be found
  278.    in the ELFISH directory. Load it into your paint programme before
  279.    drawing objects. It contains the proper palette for conversion.

  281. SETUP
  282. -----
  283.  
  284. one additional utility has been added at the last minute that isnt even
  285. mentioned in the manual it is called SETUP.EXE
  286.  
  287. SETUP lets you quickly and easily update El-Fisg if you change your
  288. video card or if you change or add a sound card without repeating he
  289. entire instalation process.
  290.  
  291. To run SETUP, make sure you are in the ELFISH directory, type SETUP
  292. [Enter], and follow the directions on screen.
